Winter CSA Shares Are Now Available! What is the CSA Program? Community Supported Agriculture - or CSA - is an alternative way of purchasing healthy produce and supporting your local farmers. CSA members pay for a share of the harvest at the beginning of the growing season, and then pick up their very own box of delicious, organic, and local produce once a week. Paying for a share of a farm’s harvest in advance helps farmers plan and budget for the year while minimizing the risks that are normally involved in farming. In exchange, CSA members receive a weekly supply of fresh and nutritious produce and the satisfaction of knowing where their food comes from! It’s a beautiful, rainy day at the farm today. The plants are happy!

With the nearing change of seasons from summer to fall, the earth undergoes a remarkable transformation as it prepares to yield a new crop. As temperatures cool and daylight hours shorten, plants begin to shift their energy towards producing seeds and fruits that will become the next generation of flora. This transition is not merely a natural occurrence, but a strategic adaptation by plant species to ensure their survival in changing environmental conditions. Farmers also play a crucial role during this time, carefully planning their harvests and preparing their fields for winter crops. The shift from summer to fall marks a period of renewal and growth in the agricultural world, highlighting the resilience and resourcefulness of both nature and those who work with it.

Its going to be one heck of a weekend at the Vancouver Farmers Markets, so make sure you come on down and support your local farmers. Tomatoes have arrived!!  We now have Roma’s, plus we are in full swing for Sun Hit heirloom tomatoes!  Eggplant, beans, Macintosh apples, pears, plums, peppers, salad mix, arugula, all kinds of basil, zucchini, tomatillos, and carrots.  You name it, we probably have it, all organic of course!  And as always, our amazing zucchini loaves and focaccia bread. FUN FOOD FACTS Beets are often associated with eastern European countries however, they had their start by the Mediterranean sea. The sea beet is the wild ancestor of our domesticated beet. It grows wild around the shores of the Mediterranean as it has since ancient times. Ancient Mediterraneans began cultivating this plant not for its root, but for its leafy greens. These greens, known as “chard”, were domesticated around 2000 BC to season the soups of Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and other coast dwellers. Beets are fantastic storage vegetables and can last a long time in the fridge. Keep them covered in plastic to prevent them from going soft. Some Beet Ideas: Grilled Cheese: Beets bring your grilled cheese sandwich to the next level! Make your grilled cheese as per usual and simply add sliced boiled or pickled beets when doing so. Mozzarella or provolone on Klippers garlic sourdough will knock it out of the park. Smoothies: Want to hide some veggies in your breakfast without it “tasting too earthy”? Try this recipe: BEET SMOOTHIE Ingredients 1/2 cup fresh beet , chopped (I don’t peel it) 1/2 -inch piece fresh ginger (peeled) 1/2 cup orange juice 1/2 cup water 1 frozen banana , cut into pieces 1 cup frozen strawberries Instructions Combine the beets, ginger, orange juice, and water in a blender and blend until very smooth, with no visible pieces of beet or ginger remaining. Add in the frozen strawberries and banana, and blend until smooth. Serve right away or refrigerate for up to 24 hours, or freeze it! Muffins: There are endless recipe options to suit anyone’s dietary needs. Beet red velvet cake is a great option too. Burgers: Annamarie recommends finely grated beets and smashed chick peas as your base mix. You can also add in some shredded turnip or carrots and spice it to your own taste. Protein Balls: A perfect snack after the gym or while you’re on the go. Orange zest, coconut and cocoa are a few great ingredient options.

Meet Krista and Matthew. Krista has worked for Klippers for about four years as the farm coordinator for the markets in the Vancouver area. Recently, the two of them moved to Cawston and now live and work full time on the farm. Krista is your friendly CSA Coordinator (among other things), and Matthew does the maintenance. Both of them are our head beekeepers! Here you can see them feeding the bees and making them very happy. Bees were brought in to pollinate the farm. This year's focus is on getting the bees comfortable, fed, and established. No honey will be taken from them this year; instead it will be left in the hives to feed the colonies over the long winter months. But next year - who knows? When asked what her favourite thing is about working for Klippers, Krista had a hard time picking just one. But after some thought she settled on "the food". Makes sense! In their spare time, Krista and Matthew are both musicians, which incidentally, is how they met 4.5 years ago. Meet our new CSA Coordinator, Cecile Dechame! Having grown up in France, Cecile gained an appreciation for fresh produce while accompanying her grandma on weekly trips to the farmers market. After living in Ireland and Italy, Cecile settled in Vancouver five years ago, and she never left her passion for farmers markets behind. Exploring local markets became a staple in her travels, where she relished meeting locals, immersing herself in the lively ambiance, and savoring the colorful array of produce. Initially disappointed by the quality and taste of food in Canada compared to Europe, Cecile's luck changed when she stumbled upon Klippers Organics. Their values and commitment to food transparency aligned perfectly with hers. In 2022, Cecile started volunteering at Klippers' Vancouver Farmers Market booth. Recently (in the summer of 2023), Cecile took a leap and left city life to embrace full-time work on the Klippers farm. Engaging with market visitors, Cecile enjoys sharing her nutrition knowledge. For her, food is the key to a healthy body and mind. She takes immense pride in contributing to a farm that prioritizes high-quality, nourishing food for families! We are excited to share that through our "Farmers Supporting Families" program, we have successfully raised enough funds to support seven families in the Similkameen Valley/Okanagan region for a duration of 17 weeks! What this means is that 7 families will be receiving Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares at no cost during our peak growing season. Along with providing fresh fruits and vegetables, we are delighted to offer fresh focaccia bread to the participating families. This year, we have partnered with local organizations, Lower Similkameen Early Years & OneSky Community Resources to collaborate on logistics. Approximately half of the donated food will be dedicated to this partnership. We are proud to focus on supporting early years and single parent households through this partnership. This collaboration is especially meaningful to our team as Annamarie, farm co-owner, was once a single mom to her two children, Azalya and Brayden. ☺️ Thanks to all who supported this program this year!

As grocery prices rise, we've put together some information to answer one of your most pressing questions this year: 'Is supporting Community Supported Agriculture economically viable for my household?' We'll start off by saying that as grocery prices continue to increase, our CSA rates have remained unchanged. We understand that many households are feeling financial strain, and the last thing we want to do is contribute to this. Taking part in Community Supported Agriculture allows individuals and families to buy directly from local farmers, providing a variety of fresh, seasonal produce that is healthier for you, the planet, and your budget - which is particularly important right now. Furthermore, we'd like to highlight that although our CSA rates are based on $30/week (small) and $50/week (large), we always provide more than this. Ultimately, we strongly believe that by supporting each other as customers and farmers, we can work together to overcome the challenge of rising food costs. We hope that this market research we put together over the past week can act as proof of this. 🌱🌎 Moreover, in honour of earth day tomorrow, we want to mention that although the focus of this post is on household economics, the far-reaching environmental aspects of CSA are certainly not forgotten. The greenhouse is green again!🌱 To us, growing food from seed goes beyond producing quality, organic food for the upcoming season. These seeds are a profound reminder of our connection to the natural world and the cyclical nature of life. Each seed represents a cycle of growth and renewal, allowing us to witness the entire process with every farming season. As we plant seeds and watch them grow, we are also reminded of the plants’ remarkable ability to produce their own seeds, thus creating the next generation of plants. Furthermore, when the plants reach the end of their life cycle, they leave behind their remains, which enrich the soil and enable new life to flourish. This process of life, death, and regeneration is the foundation of the natural world, and a humbling reminder of the interconnectedness of all living things. In essence, on our farm, we see growing food from seeds is an act of gratitude for the natural world and all that it provides. It allows us to connect with the cycles of life, appreciate the beauty of nature, and cultivate a more regenerative, sustainable, and resilient food system that benefits both ourselves and the earth. Last week fall, this week winter! Like the beautiful dahlias pictured in slides nine and ten, most of our plants have gone to rest for the season and will be worked into the ground come spring next year. The apples are now off the trees and the squash, celeriac, potatoes, onions, and garlic have been tucked neatly into storage to feed both us and you through another winter season. Carrots, on the other hand, will continue to be harvested weekly through the winter… which is why they’re always so delicious year round. We’re also doing last call for tomatillos, pears, & plums… come & get them while you still can! ☺️ If you’re in Vancouver, you can find us now at Riley Park Farmer’s Market on Saturdays and Hastings Park Farmer’s Market on Sundays.
